Street Compass Rose
There’s something both poetic and ironic about finding a compass rose embedded in the tarmac — a relic of navigation sitting just a few metres from a working fishing port, in an age where most people rely on satellites to find the nearest café. I came across this one early in the morning, when the sun was low and the light had that burnished quality that makes asphalt glisten. The framing here was deliberate: I chose to crouch low, letting the compass rose dominate the foreground, while the fishing boats in the distance anchor the background in place. What (or Who) Are These Hangs For?
Shot under the sharp midday sun, this image was never meant to soothe. The rope nooses hanging beneath the Egidi bridge in Lazio weren’t installed for dramatic effect—at least, I assume not—but the visual reads like a theatre of unease. Their symmetrical placement across the frame, knotted with intention, stirs something more than curiosity. I took the photo from a boat, drifting slowly beneath the bridge’s concrete weight. The water was still, though not glassy—its murky green caught just enough reflection to add texture. My camera’s early test shots
Unlike fishing villages or marinas, they are not built to be looked at. They are built to work. Every object has a purpose, every line leads somewhere, every apparently random piece of machinery exists because somebody, at some point, needed it to solve a practical problem. There is very little room for decoration. This is probably why I enjoy photographing them.
