When We Thought We Would Have Changed The World

    August 21, 2014 /

I took this photograph at a street market, where these shirts hung in plain view, each one shouting a message of defiance. Slogans, graphics, and colours combined into a tapestry of protest, reminders of a time when politics and identity were worn quite literally on the chest. The immediacy of the words—ribelli sempre, non mi avrete mai come volete voi—speaks of resistance, of collective identity built in opposition to authority. I framed the image tightly to remove context and distractions. The viewer is left with nothing but the shirts, their messages, and the pins holding them up. This close composition turns an everyday street scene into a typographic study. The…

    Line Of Fire

    July 6, 2014 /

This image was taken inside a shooting range, but I wasn’t there to document firearms. I was drawn to geometry, symmetry, and control. What struck me was the sheer order of the space. Every line — from the foam cladding to the shooting lanes — channels the viewer’s gaze forward. You don’t look at this picture. You’re funnelled through it. Technically, the space presented a challenge: low, mixed lighting and reflective surfaces. I shot handheld, wide open, leaning into the natural light spread to keep shadows soft and detail intact. The overhead panels, designed for acoustic insulation, created an unusual texture that became an integral compositional element. The ceiling almost…

    Waiting For The Elections

    June 24, 2014 /

Shot on a Leica M9 with a Zeiss Biogon 35mm f/2.8, this image is more about suspension than action. The frame holds a waiting posture — literally and metaphorically. No speeches, no slogans, just the inertia of democratic process taking over the political machinery. I wanted to convey stillness without silence. The Biogon’s rendering gave me that microcontrast and edge clarity I rely on when details matter more than gestures. The M9 sensor — as unpredictable as it can be in mixed light — held together the tonal values well here, especially in the midtones. Shadow detail was secondary; this wasn’t about hiding or revealing, but about the unresolved pause…

    Just In Case

    June 9, 2014 /

Should you have some doubt, by reading the banner you can’t be mistaken. Clarity can be a virtue, even when it delivers its message with the blunt weight of inevitability. Here, a simple blue sign announces the location of the mortuary—not just once, but three times, in three languages. French, Latin, English. No ambiguity, no chance of misunderstanding. Just in case. The composition frames the sign against the muted greys of the surrounding architecture, a deliberate choice to strip away distractions. The words stand out, rendered in stark, functional typography, their neutrality belying the emotional weight of the place they indicate. Photography thrives on layers of meaning, and here the…

    Whatever You Stand For, Vote!

    May 24, 2014 /

A large digital screen mounted on the exterior of a modern building, prominently announces the European Elections scheduled for 22–25 May 2014. The display uses a bright, cool-toned light that contrasts sharply with the dark perforated metal surface behind it, ensuring high visibility even in daylight. The message is framed within clean geometric lines, reinforcing the institutional clarity of the communication.

    National Security

    April 4, 2014 /

A danger for the National Security? This picture is nothing special, but for the fact that while I was taking it a security guard at the European Parliament tried to stop me on the “National Security” excuse, by claiming that photos were not allowed. Minding the lesson of “Stand your ground” I countered politely the requests of the guard, by telling him: – First: shooting in public spaces is perfectly legal, – Second: there where no “no-photos allowed” signs, – Third: “I am a lawyer and a journalist. I checked both EU and Belgian Law and find nothing that could prevent me to do what I am doing. Could you…

    Off-Duty Eurocrats in Bruxelles

    March 28, 2014 /

Late afternoon outside the European Parliament is a curious time. The intensity of the day’s debates, meetings, and bureaucratic rituals evaporates into the chill air, leaving behind something more recognisably human. I caught this scene as the sun was sinking, the light flattening into that pale, slightly diffused wash Brussels often wears in winter. I framed the shot to emphasise the contrast between the rigid geometry of the architecture and the small figure of the man stepping into the foreground. The curved glass façade on the right dominates, its repeating elements pulling the eye deeper into the image. The building almost seems to lean forward, pressing its presence into the…

    The Traffic Controller

    November 20, 2013 /

The man in the reflective uniform wasn’t posing, wasn’t waiting. He was simply doing his job — coordinating chaos with the quiet authority only experience provides. The scene unfolded quickly: the fire brigade’s crane on standby, the red and blue lights diffused by daylight, the line of hesitant cars waiting for a signal that only one person could give. I didn’t have much time to frame this; sometimes a good photograph is more a matter of presence than planning. I shot slightly underexposed to preserve the detail in the brighter areas of the sky and keep the colour temperature cool and flat, emphasising the mundane over the dramatic. Compositionally, the…

    Peeping the Misery

    September 4, 2013 /

A rough opening in a white wall becomes the frame. The edges are jagged, still bearing the scars of whatever blow created them. Through it, the eye is led into another world—a dusty, abandoned space where sunlight slices across the ground. On the floor lies a tangle of debris: fragments of cloth, splinters, and what seems to be a torn banner, its once-bright colours now dulled. The text on it is broken, unreadable, a language interrupted. In the background, shapes blur into shadow—remnants of furniture, perhaps, or the skeletal remains of another wall. This photograph is about looking in without stepping in. The viewer is held at a distance, forced…

    Crowd Control At Dusk

    July 16, 2013 /

This is, in a nutshell, a compact study of informal authority and public order, staged in the liminal light of early evening. A temporary barrier creates both a literal and symbolic threshold: on one side, a cluster of young men negotiating space, status, and access; on the other, uniformed officers whose stillness and spacing communicate control without overt intervention.

    Get Ready for The Duty

    July 13, 2013 /

Twilight hits differently in industrial spaces — it smooths the sharp angles and softens the glare of primary colours. This shot, taken just outside the Stadio Adriatico, finds a firefighter in quiet preparation while the world behind him begins to stir. The fire engine’s bold typography — VIGILI DEL FUOCO — is less a design element than a declaration, slicing across the frame in a defiant horizontal. I composed this frame to split the visual tension. On the right, a single man and a machine. On the left, a group of police officers huddled in conversation, their presence as much about routine as readiness. The stairs and monumental architecture climb…
