The Rise And Fall of Pizzeria Liceo – One Shot Story

    November 15, 2025 /

For decades, it was established in 1963, not only the students of the Liceo Classico on the other side of Via Venezia, but almost all the inhabitants of my hometown, paid a visit to Pizzeria Liceo (aptly named after the aforementioned school). Truant students often chose it to spend a few hours waiting to come back home, cheating their parents about their daily chores. New romances began and couples broke up. Lonely young men — and adults, too — would stop by and mumble to themselves about their bad luck in love, family or work.  On the way home after a tiring day at work, it wasn’t uncommon to stop by and…

A Moto Guzzi Falcone and an Expired Kodak Portra 160 Roll

    October 25, 2025 /

Shot with a Pentax SMC FA 50/1,4 and a Pentax Z-20 loaded with an expired Kodak Portra 160, this photo portrays a Moto Guzzi Falcone. The Falcone has a special place in the history of Italian motor industry. It was successful in both the civilian market and the military/law enfrocement sector. So strong was its appeal in this latter community that the Polizia Stradale (roughly, the highway patrol) kept it in service until the seventies despite the official manufacturing ceased at the end of the sixties.

    July 11, 2024 /

Tevere, the river that divides Rome in two, is one of my favourite places. No matter how much chaos there is in the ‘high places’: walking along the banks of the river puts you in another dimension, where time has no meaning and the pace slows down – Initially published on 35mmc.com Anchored boats stand still, in stark contrast to the fast-moving streets, crowded with cars, bicycles, pedestrians and tourists who have returned in droves once the pandemic is over. This is obviously a mirror image, but it looks as if it has been projected onto a digital screen. And here is what was mirrored: There are a lot of…

    Yet Another WDISF Post

    May 5, 2024 /

Yes, this is another ‘why do I shoot film’ post, and no, the answers are not ‘because it slows me down’, ‘because it connects me to the act of taking pictures’, ‘because I love the unique feeling of analogue images’, ‘because the inherent limitations of a film camera inspire creativity’, ‘why not?’ or any of the other common (and perfectly legitimate) reasons usually associated with the question. In addition, the wide range of post-processing options available to make a digital image look like an analogue one, even in terms of film emulsion, satisfies the need to produce an image with the ‘personality’ of a specific film. So, even the idea…

    A Hellish Look

    March 26, 2024 /

It is quite common these days to see images of various kinds using the facade of a building as a screen. In the case of government or state buildings, a flag appears out of nowhere after dusk. The overall effect is quite spectacular, especially in Italy where the palaces of power are beautiful works of art. However, when photographed with a narrow field of view, the result can be disturbing, as in this case, where the building looks more like some sort of hell embassy. It wouldn’t be strange, though: doesn’t the Pope live on the other side of the Tevere River?

    Just Another Times Square View

    July 9, 2014 /

I made this photograph in 2000, standing in Times Square with a Canon film camera loaded with Portra 160. It was a different city then—louder in some ways, rougher at the edges, less polished than the LED-saturated spectacle it would later become. What interested me was not the chaos itself, but the uneasy coexistence between permanence and transience: stone and steel on one side, light and commerce on the other. The composition is deliberately vertical, almost architectural. The frame stacks elements upward rather than outward: the dense mass of midtown buildings rises on the left, while the illuminated billboards dominate the right. The Budweiser sign acts as a visual anchor,…
