    Shooting Kite Surfing

    September 22, 2024 /

Kite surfing is quite spectacular but difficult to photograph. As with any water sport, the main difference that affects the results is whether or not the photographer is embedded in the organisation. In the former case, being allowed to stay on the official boats allows him to be closer to the action and get better shots. In the other case, the photographer must essentially rely on a telephoto lens (the longer the better) at the expense of depth of field – Initially published on 35mmc.com. Jumps and the flight phase are the most spectacular moments to capture. However, as the next two photos show, it is essential that the autofocus works…

    Kite Surfers

    October 16, 2021 /

There’s a certain theatricality to kitesurfing that photography loves. The kites add the essential vertical accents, their bright reds and blues pulling the eye away from the muted tones of sea and stone. The choice of timing is decisive. The central figure is caught at the peak of his jump, the board still angled upwards, knees bent, hands taut on the bar.…

    Kite Surfer Under Duress

    January 29, 2021 /

The wind was already rising when I reached the beach. Grey sky, hard light, the kind of day most people read from behind a window. But the kitesurfers were already out—lines taut, boards skipping through the chop. What always strikes me about this scene isn’t just the colour of the kites against a flat sky, or the sharp angles they carve into the wind—it’s the resolve. They know what they’re getting into. The cold. The salt in their eyes. The bruises. And they do it anyway. Because this is when it’s real. That’s what drew me to raise the camera. The same drive, maybe. You don’t wait for golden hour.…
