Shooting Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA)-like Events

    August 15, 2024 /

Historical reenactments are everywhere, and the volunteers who keep alive the memory of our past deserve our highest praise. Along with pure re-enactments, where the fate of the participants is already predetermined by history, and HEMA, where athletes compete using European weaponry and armour, there is a middle-ground discipline that is gaining momentum in Italy: Sport Reenactment – Initially published by 35mmc.com In short, SR players take part in reenactment events wearing faithful replica of the coats and arms of ancient Italian, Greek, Celtic and German tribes. But they also meet in forests and mountains to fight following a ruleset but without knowing in advance who is going to win. The…

Not Sure I Would Like The Feel

    November 22, 2014 /

There’s something both fascinating and faintly unsettling about this photograph. At first glance, it’s a familiar object — a double bass, resting in its case, warm varnished wood catching the light. But then the eye meets the alien appendages: an elaborate framework of carbon-fibre rods, clamps, and actuators, bolted to the instrument’s body. Tradition and craft meet machine logic here, in a way that’s almost confrontational. From a compositional standpoint, the photographer has made a decisive choice to fill the frame with the instrument, anchoring it in the lower half while allowing the vertical lines of the robotic structure to carry the gaze upwards. The background, populated with drums, flight…

    A Manual-Focus Atteimpt on a Moving Target

    July 26, 2013 /

I made this photograph at night, when the fairground lights were at their brightest and the air had that electric hum of machinery, music, and laughter. The ride—small spacecraft rising and falling in uneven rhythm—looked as if it were trying to lift free of the noise below. The name Luna Park glowed behind them, an invitation and a declaration all at once.
